  1. Oli, what in particular did your mum like? What would be of the same period etc that you don't have?
  2. William, this is not bad, I like the banner at the bottom though I don't know what technical difficulties this may present in the printing and binding. I wouldn't kern the capital C's so closely with the o's. and I might suggest spelling out "Great Britain" and making the ''2005" small enough to fit with the "Great Britain", perhaps "2005 Edition". I wish I could see Sylvester's cover at the same time as yours. I like his presentation of the florin very much.
  3. Oli, if you want to pique your mum's interest, you might think about staying out of the books and show her the coins. "Isn't this a cool coin?" kind of thing, not long, just a bit, but on a regular basis, two or three times a week. It took my mom over 40 years to catch the bug, and that's because my dad just didn't do enough to share his coins with her. Once I got ahold of his coins and went through them with her, she was hooked. I'm not saying that your mom will get hooked like that, but if her interest is whetted a little, would that be a bad thing?
  4. Capsules in a tray or cabinet sounds tops, but I come back to one of my original questions in this thread: what about coins that still move about in their capsules? For example: I got 39mm capsules from Chris (thanks Chris) and put a Wreath crown into one, and it moves about.... What is a body to do about this? And what about the shrinking farthing? My Wm III farthing isn't going to fit into a Geo VI farthing-appropriate capsule.
  5. With a view to increasing traffic, and therefore also prospective customer exposure for both Predecimal and Rotographic, what about making the Forum one that is linked from both Predecimal and Rotographic but has an independent look? Perhaps it would be possible to link from other coin sellers as well--Chris, what do you think other sellers would say to this?
  6. Oli, it's great that your mum is looking out for your collection. Is she very much involved in it? Is that something you can cultivate with her? Has she looked with you at Chris' site?
  7. I also had this question a while back, and Chris does have access to them. Somewhere I found them available on the Internet, but they are expensive suckers. They give prices rather higher than Krause. So... Chris... are you there??
  8. Kuhli, I agree with what you say in general terms, but I wonder still if there isn't something else that makes trays and cabinets a matter of disinterest in the US. Expense might be the reason, but I wonder what would happen if someone made a concerted effort at marketing. Part of the problem I think is that there's just no tradition of trays & cabinets, so people don't think about them.
  9. I had such a good reply ready and my puter crashed.... Slabbed coins is a topic over which Chris and I have exchanged some shared unfavo(u)rable sentiments.... I had to laugh when I saw what Sylvester had to say about MS64's being cracked open to get them graded as 65's because it's all too true. Slabbed are popular in America because they relieve the need for really looking at what you have in your hand. People assume that the grading service gives a guarantee that what you have in your hand is what it says on the tag. Dealers like slabbed because collectors will pay more. It's like King George is a slabbed politician, so people don't really think anymore whether he is what he's graded as.... *ahem*
  10. I think having the banner as Chris has it now is good. It's important for Predecimal.com that it bears the "ownership" of the Forum, as it has a primary relationship with coins, offering them and buying them, and Rotographic has a secondary relationship, i.e., offering books about coins. In short, I agree with Kuhli! You gotta love that guy! A Rotographic category would do what needs doing. And Chris has more important things to do than fiddling too much with something that not only is not broken, but works very well. Now Chris has two good ideas about the financial upside of the qualitative differences between CCGB2004 and 2005. Any others floating around out there?
  11. Just so everybody is clear, I am in America, and Sylvester is right, there is a gulf between UK and US storage. Trays and cabinets are almost unknown here. Perhaps that is because having a piece of furniture to store coins in was traditionally less practical in a the relatively more mobile population of the US, but I will admit I am speculating. Are the coins in trays loose? How does a coin cabinet work? There are certain things some of us take for granted that are well in the realm of ignorance for others of us. Please also keep in mind that having "a" cabinet would involve, eventually, one for Michael, one for Christopher, one for Katherine.... one for my mother.... Perhaps we should have Predecimal.com establish a Pauper's Coin Storage Fund...
  12. I think linking to this forum from rotographic.com is a good idea, and would suggest a category for particular Rotographic matters. Cross-fertilization will help us all. As far as the quality matter goes, what about offering a special sale to those purchasing a CCGB2004? To wit, half-price for 2004 and full-price for 2005, payable immediately, the 2005 to be sent off as soon as it comes off the press.
  13. I store my coins mostly in 2x2s in 8x11 sheets in notebooks. I would be glad to hear about the relative benefits of trays and cabinets, especially as I have a few crowns in plastic holders that don't fit into the sheets. Also--some of the crowns end up being somewhat loose in my holders (the ones I got from Chris). Any suggestions?
  14. Kudos to Kuhli for this amazing piece of encyclopeadic numismatica. I propose him for the July 2004 Perkins Award for Numismatic Arcana (PANA).
  15. Daniel, registering here would be the best thing, that way you would have a host of eyes looking at your coin.
  16. Daniel, is there any chance to upload a picture of this? Any date on it?
  17. I take the point about the evolving tradition, but I think a single very nice coin is going to attract the most attention. Several coins on a cover that size is going to look cluttered.
  18. In a word, yes.
  19. Finally got the file, Chris, what a vast improvement over last year's CC! I think the list of monarchs has its place, though; I wouldn't be too quick to move it away. Experienced collectors of British are going to know it cold, but you are after all hoping that there will be a lot of people without collecting experience who will buy the book.
  20. I don't know how early and late S's distinguish themselves. The ones on this coin are thick in the outer, vertical curves, left upper and right lower, and thin in the transit or middle curve. Compare this to S.1379E and 1379H, which show thinness in the vertical curves and thickness in the middle curve. What does that makes my S sound like to you? No, I didn't think this was an 8b, I just found that as an example of a trifoliate, which this is clearly not, and a collar, which I still think this has.
  21. Sylvester, have a look at S.1406, Edward I class 8b. This shows a trifoliate crown very clearly, I really think mine is bifoliate. This also shows a double collar, not as high as the one on my coin. I really don't see it as a double chin. I'll do some right-brain looking at mine again, but right now I don't see the double chin. If that higher bit of engraving, in which the points go right up to the hair, is not a collar, it would have to be the neck, and that would seem very thick to me, particularly given the thinness of the jawline. Thanks for the links. They are very helpful.
  22. Chris, I'm fine with that. Email away. Also check out my last email to you.
  23. Actually I don't think there's too much on the coin you can't see in the pics, in fact I've been looking more at the pics because they show all the details much larger than the coin itself. Absent a catalogue with complete pictures of all the types, however, I don't see how to get much further. This portrait is much friendlier than the run-of-the-mill Edwards I see in Spink. Do you have access to the SCBI or BNJ? Have they published articles with more pics of the Edwards than Spink provides? And what does everybody think about the grade of this coin?
  24. Sylvester try this florin... I have a nicer one than this, but not as brilliant, and not photographed. I like seeing Vic's face. The green leaves me a little so-so? What about having the white spaces at the top in gold, and gold for the initials "CC" and for "05"? And keeping the text otherwise all in the forest green. The lime is what doesn't appeal to me. What about something in a burgundy? Have you tried that out already? I can't remember at the moment all the versions I've looked at.
  25. I'm still having the same problem. It downloads and when I try to open it, AR reader says the file is damaged.
