Threepenny bits and various
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I've merged your topics bob, as the threepence one looked alone. -
Blimey, you want the moon on a stick you do! The GB proof sets are all worth around £4-7 each if they contain untoned coins and are as issued. I'm afraid I don't have time to look up the 'foreigners', perhaps someone else will.

It's a farthing, not worth a lot if it's worn/in a state. I have one around about Fair in the next newsletter for £1 I believe. If I can ever find the time to send it out!

Moscow Olympic Silver commemerative
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in Enquiries about Non British coins
I'm sure I've had pre Soviet, Latvian 1930's Lati before. -
Now what do you think of this idea?
Chris Perkins replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Coin Publications Forum
I'd thought of that too, but Rotographic is also pretty well known (I think, although I modestly admit, probably not so much as predecimal.com among web surfing circles). So I don't want to get rid of either name. In fact I quite like the name 'Rotographic' too. I also like Rotodecimal!! Ah, the many problems with empire building. -
Nor did you know the correct place in the forum to put this question. I'll just move you the the 'Enquiries about British coins' part.
-
Wow, I like that very much! Can you produce one that's A5 size and at 300dpi resolution? I think that's wonderful. Big clap for William.

I think that the people visiting this forum may well be interested in the Rotographic website, so the banner will stay in it's current form at the moment. I may decide to change the look of the forum and make a rotographic link in the blue bit at the top. -
George III 1804 Dollar
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have a similar Irish 6 Shilling forgery on this page: http://www.predecimal.com/forged/georgeiii.htm And I have heard about BoE Dollar forgeries. Value depends on how much someone would be willing to pay for it, as there are no price guides on the subject (now, there's an idea!!). I would expect anywhere from £10 - 50 depending on exact state. Perhaps less if it's awful. -

The forum is hosted in my own space on my own database. I have to pay an annual fee for the hosting, and a little extra because of the extra bandwidth use, that I hadn't planned on, due to the popularity of the forum! -
I'll get a price list, and list them here. I thought about putting them on the website, but thought the fact they are all in German would render them hard to justify the time.

Kuhli, Yes, of course I can get pretty much all the Schoen books in my local book shop, and I believe I can also get them from SAFE (one of my suppliers) if I ask nicely enough. I can also send it to the US at book rate which sometimes works out pretty reasonable. Shall I make enquiries about the latest 1900 - date edition? I have a feeling they are split into centuries like Krause.

This one was also free, providing a keep the invision link at the bottom. I'm not happy with creating a little out of the way forum in the nothing to do with coins area, because that isn't strictly true. The subject matter of most of the books is very much to do with coins. And I don't want to set up a new one because of the time it takes to get these things established. I'll think of a way of integrating the two sites into one forum :s. It won't suddenly go pear shaped for you lot, so son't worry. When have I ever let you down? -

But you lot need to have nothing to do with the book questions, if there are any. Essentially it will be the same forum and we'll still get the same kinds of people asking the same kinds of coin questions. At this stage I'll at least link to this forum from rotographic.co.uk, and perhaps I'll create another forum especially for the books. I suppose I ought to get the bloody things finished first! At this stage I must admit that I'm embarrassed about the current CCGB2004. The banknotes/Irish and Roman tend to be printed to a higher quality, and I can live with those, but do you know I almost cringe everytime I send a CCGB2004 to someone, hoping it won't put them off buying my very own 2005 book!! -

I would make sure that not only the books were talked about, the fact that this forum as it is contains very little talk about books would back that up. I'd re shuffle it well so that it basically included the exact same sections as it does now, plus a book discussion area. I thought about creating and linking to a sub forum, but then anyone registering would just be registering on the main forum like everyone else. I could set up a completey new forum, but then it would just be boring until the volume of posts got up to a respectable level, which would take 6 mths to a year. Here, I have instant posts by the 1000. Whatever I decide, I do think that a forum for visitors of rotographic.co.uk will be useful. -
I was thinking about changing the look and name of this whole forum to be the 'Rotographic Forum' and linking to it from www.rotographic.co.uk and from predecimal.com as it is now. I thought that perhaps a discussion forum would benefit the people that are looking for books on the subject, and I could eventually re shuffle things and perhaps provide forums for each book title, in order to get input and just for people to discuss that subject. Essentially it would be the same place on the same URL, but it would be the 'Rotographic forum, hosted by Predecimal'. I think it can only compliment the Rotographic website, and help promote the books to people that would perhaps prefer to have a little chat with one of us friendly lot. What do you think?

My uncle Peter got married in the national maritime Museum last weekend. I used to live not far from there, and uncle Peter is about the only member of the family that still lives where we 'came from'. Oh well, that was obviously nothing to do with the coin, but it does seem like we have an answer for Daniel. Thanks Kuhli, very well done.

I'm not! I was much rather hoping you lot would do the cover, and you're doing just fine. I hear what Geoff is saying about having a variety of coins, including a modern one on the front cover. I also understand that aethetically perhaps just one or two coins would be better than cluttering the cover with more. I like the Gothic florin covers....Nothing to do with the coin, it just looks good with one single large coin on the front. What about some kind of design with 2 coins overlapping, with perhaps a Cartwheel twopenny reverse in the foreground to represent where the book starts, and a 'New pence' twopenny reverse just behind it to represent this years ridiculous modern rumour? Perhaps both images could be the same size as that would look better.

Edward, are you ok with a 2mb email attachment? I could email it.
-
It works ok for me. I've deleted it, and re uploaded it just now.
-
Thankyou very much, I'll check it out and I'm sure I'll be using stuff. I've already taken your halfpenny, posted above!
-
Oh yes, that thing will be going, I just haven't got around to doing the foreword/contents/introduction kind of pages yet. The list is useful for novices, I'll try to squeeze it in somewhere, but it does look like a contents page, when it isn't! And you're right about the dates, I actually didn't mean to go back that far, but seem to have gotten carried away! I wanted it to overlap into GIII, but not to cover it all. I want to carry on with the Collectors George III Coins book, and with your help, create a really wonderful volume on GIII alone. I originally wanted to start at 1800 with silver, and 1797 with copper. I'll change the next version to scrub those carried away 3d's!
-
I think so, but it will affect the cost. I'll get some sample stuff done at the printers soon, perhaps the bronze/copper section as a mini book, as that bit is already done. Regardless of the extra cost I would very much like to have a colour image on the cover.

Sylvester: Do that on a white background, ink costs money! Edward: I like to think there are differences between the best way to market things to a UK audience, compared to a US one. Perhaps I'm wrong, perhaps we respond to exactly the same things, but personally I deplore some US style marketing, the kind we see increasingly on cheap cable tv/shopping channels these days. I don't need a Chi energy machine, nor do a want a ball that rolls around the kitchen floor by itself, cleaning at the same time (yes, we have those dubbed adverts in Germany) and that kind of advert makes me deliberately want to do all I can to not by things advertised that way. So the books will stay as damned well British as I can keep them...Even if it involves obsessive nit picking
