Cool denarius! I also like David's (bit scrappy but crisp) drachm of Napki Malka.

As for Scott, I wonder if it's like those programmes on hoarding? One day there will be a news article on a bloke that has to be dug out of his house because he's buried in coins and can't get to the toaster!

As for me, I picked this up yesterday. Another not-a-coin. This time an advertising jeton for an aperitif! Not dated but presumably from the end of the 19th century. Brass and about the diameter (though half the weight) of an old shilling.

The interesting thing (for me) is that the design for Marianne seems to be based on that of Eugène André Oudiné. This (AFAIK) was never used for any French coins, although he was a designer at the Paris mint (and known for the bust of Ceres that appeared on French coins from 1849-98), but it was used for many years in Argentina.

Presumably there were no copyright laws in those days ..

Excellent strike.

Terrific condition, indeed... Notable is that coins of small diameter show die cracks quite often. The pressure per square area is quite high for smaller dies, so they have a shorter life time compared to dies with an higher surface.

by the way, the currency system in most German states at this time was non-decimal as well. In Prussia the Groschen was equal to 12 Pfennig (Pennies). 30 Groschen were one Taler

Yes, but what you probably didn't realise is that it lift off was vertically down - to emerge in Australia. The astronaut was Jules Verne......... maybe not.
