    Ebay's Worst Offerings

He'll be lucky if he makes £100 there are others starting at £42 and another after 11 bids has only got to £82. I can't understand people paying that sort of money for a modern coin. Save it and buy a VF 1895 crown for £50 (only 250K minted), have money left over to take the Missus for a pub lunch, and still have an ounce of solid silver in your pocket as well as a beautiful coin.

What would a normal price for the coin be?

As promised a picture of my rather cruddy 1899 half crown after 4 weeks soaking in olive oil and then a gentle dab with cotton buds and acetone. IMO it hasn't done the coin any harm and has got rid of a lot of the dirt that had built up around the inscription, compare it with the original posted earlier, especially noticeable around the H. I found that the treatment loosed up the really heavy dirt and a gentle prod with a tooth pick and it came away, I could have gone further but didn't want to chance it.

Received the 1888 Florin I won on Sundays auction, cheers Declan it's a lovely coin, and fills a huge gap in my collection.
  9. Looking at CCGB 2016 about the 1954 penny it states that one was found in change and is now in the BM, and another was sold by Rasmussen for £37,500 in 2006. So it may be that the Empire 1963 and Spink 1991 are different coins and that would explain the different toning. Don't know where Chris gets his info from so he might have some more.

    Egyptian Gold Coins???

The 1293 date is an AH date (After Hegira) this would convert into a western date of about 1876, a direct conversion is very difficult. I'm sorry that is about all I can help you with, however Rotographic (see advert at the top) publish a book on Arabic Coins which might help, I have some of there other titles and I find them very useful.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Thanks Nordle got pipped at the post bidding for a Gothic Florin last night and I was the only bidder, just got a feeling it might have been the seller pulling his item out as it didn't make as much as he wanted, I am just being cynical and a bad loser lol.

Can anyone explain what a "Private Listing" buyer on Ebay is or means?
  16. Is it me or does the G in GEOR look off line, or is that normal for this coin. It's a beaut' by the way. The 1817 is similar but not as pronounced as the 1818.

    Double Florins

LOL dump ass as usual, my df is so bad I can only now just make out the JEB, had to look at a nicer crown to see a decent example.

    Double Florins

Hi Guy, Sorry I can't help you on your search for double florins, I have a single 1890 variant and a standard one and a pretty poor quality one at that, however it's one of my first coins so pretty attached to it. However curious about JEB, am I missing something as it's not an inscription I am familiar with, or am I being a dump ass as usual? Phill
  19. OK I'm a newbie, I keep my coins in a slip album, it's cheap and convenient and seems to keep the contents protected but easy to look at, but everyone else talks about quadrums, envelopes, capsules and slaps etc am I doing something wrong? a proper BOBO or RANG TANG

    My Saxon Coin Collection

A wonderful collection Paddy there is some great history behind everyone of those coins. I know next to nothing about hammered coins so I won't comment on there quality etc. By my recollection of early English kings you are about half way to completing your collection, but I don't know if the likes of Sweynforkbeard, Edmund Ironside or Eadwig issued any as they were only around for a short time.
  21. Sorry Swanny I'm even more jealous, didn't think the goth crown existed outside of museums and myth. As a Crown fan it has gone to number 1.
  22. That Gothic Florin is a beaut, and I'm v jealous, I can't decide if that or the EVII Florin is my favorite coin.

Is nail polish remover acceptable for acetone, if not where do you get it from?

    Hi new collector

Hi Iain and welcome only started really collecting myself a year ago, and only join the forum a week ago. Found the best place to get coins for beginners is ebay, got a 100 old pennies for £6.50 last week, most were in a shocking state but a few nice ones including a 1912 Heaton mint (one of the penny aficionados will most likely explain) which in theory covers the 6.50 spent, and the rest forms the basis for a penny collection.
