Chris Perkins Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I'm putting together a re-print of Richard Plant's 'Arabic Coins and How to Read them' and need to put a coin on the cover and also to transcribe the Arabic on it.Can anyone here confirm what I have already gleaned from websites/google translate etc? HistoricCoinage Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I personally don't but know plenty who can. If you want I can ask around if I have the image. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Ok, here's the text. Images of obv and rev to follow. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Obv. What mainly concerns me is the 'Faisal' bit - it looks so much longer on the script than on the coin and I just wondered if that's just an abbreviated script that says the same, or if spells Faisal differently or whatever. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) Right, initial reports suggest that there's some misspelling on your page:Faisal should be spelt فيصل and not فصيالل as that would be transliterated as Fasaiall, and kingdom should be المملكة. Edited May 6, 2014 by HistoricCoinage Quote
scott Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) erm... in the imagethe date 1439 you said is in actually 1349 in the Arabic numbers the numbers is about as far as I got. Edited May 6, 2014 by scott Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 the date 1439 you said is in actually 1349 in the Arabic numbers Well spotted, Scott! Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Faisal should be spelt فيصل and not فصيالل as that would be transliterated as Fasaiall, and kingdom should be المملكة. I've just had an Egyptian friend look these over and confirm, along with the date. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 Excellent, thanks Clive. And also Scott re the date typo.Could your Egyptian friend write out what is actually written on the coin? He'll get a credit in the book. In fact, he could even check the whole thing if he has time (for suitable recompense)! Somehow 'Kingdom' looks very different on the coin. I know they are usually very stylised. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Could your Egyptian friend write out what is actually written on the coin? In English or Arabic? I'll ask. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 7, 2014 Author Posted May 7, 2014 Arabic, because I think I know what the English is (and can type it) Quote
Colin88 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 I thought it says 1931 in Arabic ?.....and 50 in the centre? Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 (edited) I thought it says 1931 in Arabic ?.....and 50 in the centre? It does. Chris' text reflects that, the issue was the 1439 instead of 1349. Edited May 7, 2014 by HistoricCoinage Quote
