Viking East Anglia. St Ed's Memorial Coinage. S960 483/1

Recently acquired this.

I know it to be extremely rare. Only seven listed by the Fitwilliam Museam showing St Edmunds name both sides.

With checking on the net I can't find one that has been sold anywhere.

MSC search had one in an auction but it was misidentified IMO.

Question has anyone seen one on sale anywhere? Was it this good. I have this at EF? If so can you remember the value sold at?

Really would like to get a handle on this.

Kind regards

Mark

Should be N 483/1 in the header

I was contemplating that one too, but in the end decided not to bother as I only need a basic type. And this and the next lot were a bit too bright for my liking with no toning. I like my toning. :)

Didn't think you would miss it.

There were two others of the basic type. Wished I had picked up one of those as well.

Were you there?

No I would have bid on line. The only other thing I was remotely interested in was the 3a1 halfcrown. mm. bell which appeared to be over a portcullis. Presumably this was a residue of the previous incarnation of the die as a type 2 halfcrown as there is no portcullis 3a1 to my knowledge. An interesting oddity, but not a must have coin.

The town of my birth.

We have a lot of Pride in Edmund.

Rob,

That was a nice coin, looked even better in the hand.

I was hoping to get away with a sneaky cheap bid on that one, but is was sought after.

Picked up several bits and underpaid with all of them.

Hi Peter,

Thanks

I knew it was something a bit special. Just want to try and get a feel for how rare it is.

It is rare because I haven't got one I have loads of Bury mint coins.

Come on chaps a cartel is needed.

Well Peter it would be a small cartel I can only find seven listed at the Museum and a further two online using Google and MC search.

What have you got from the Bury Mint, I'd be interested to know.

I have loads.

King Edmund used to try and buy all Bury coins on Ebay.

I can't resist Robert de Hadelie and all Bury coins. :)

I still do the search.

Mark Blackburn states that there are 'a number' but only mentions a few. They are: BMC 107-8, one in SCBI East Anglia 17, possibly #4 in the Manningtree hoard, one in SCBI East Anglia 1102 and the single finds of 2001 and 1970 on the EMC. There must be far more not recorded, though.

Clive,

Thanks for that. Just the help I was looking for. Interesting that 471 of N 483 listed on the SCBI & EMC certainly this is a lot rarer.

Mark
