declanwmagee Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 It's a halfpenny, right? My 1893 halfpenny has the same break. Shows how closely I look at my coins - I never noticed before you brought it up, Chris! Quote
chris Posted November 4, 2012 Author Posted November 4, 2012 late night, the photos of a half penny Quote
declanwmagee Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 Well, it's interesting anyway. Here's mine for what it's worth...are they all broken, or has anyone got one that isn't? Quote
declanwmagee Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 also a great example of what the 3 in a 1903 open 3 should look like! Quote

chris Posted November 18, 2012 Author Posted November 18, 2012 very interesting indeedi am more of a silver collector personally but have decided to have a go at pennies starting with bun heads first and il see how i feel later onback to the 1893 penny itself though i have a numerous amount of them and realise theres the elusive 3/2 so i decided to take a photo of the dates and comparehave attached a different looking one. what do you think? (this one is a penny this time ) Quote

(this one is a penny this time )The 1893/2 penny is so difficult to spot that it is no wonder that it went unnoticed for so long. I can be shown a close-up of one and STILL probably won't see it. Tony Clayton Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 also a great example of what the 3 in a 1903 open 3 should look like! You can also see a comparison on this link Quote

scott Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 i think there are few minor differances between 3's as well. Quote
declanwmagee Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 ...and of course the Open 9 and closed 9 variants of the normal 3 coins. Your Normal 3 is very different to mine, Tony, but the 9s are the same, so no link between the different Normal 3s and the different 9s.Quick survey of Normal 3 pennies required I think... Quote

davidrj Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Bearing in mind that Tony's picture is of quite a worn normal 3, so maybe it shows some damage?Hmm, possibly an illusion due to the knock on the upper loop of his 3?we need one of those clever overlays pleaseDavid Quote

Declan's shows the usual one where the two loops of the 3 are roughly the same size, and the dividing point is about halfway. Tony's shows the dividing point lower down, almost closing off the bottom loop entirely, while the upper loop is quite 'open'. Quote
Peckris Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Here's one of those 'clever' overlays :The top picture is the overlay, then there's the original two pictures for comparison. The overlay doesn't prove much. Tony's penny shows a slight difference in size or shape of the loops, but that could be as much to do with wear as anything else. I'm not sure you can draw any firm conclusions from that. Quote
declanwmagee Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 That's good Peck, seeing them next to one another like that. Am I wrong about those 9s, do you think? Is yours a closed 9, Tony, do you think? The two 3s are clearly different. Have you got any other examples of the slight variations you mentioned, Scott? Quote

I can be shown a close-up of one and STILL probably won't see it.I don't even know what we're supposed to be looking for on an 1893/2, as I've never seen one. I know there is a pic of one in Michael Gouby's "The British Bronze Penny 1860 to 1901†Victoria specialised edition book, but I haven't got it, so I've never seen one. I also know there are different font 3's for that year, which add to the confusion. It would be very interesting to see one, and to be aware exactly what to look for. The threes look totally different on the two that I have. Quote
