How to estimate the price of a variety

Does anybody have any tips or cunning formulae to estimate what a particular variety is worth?

At present, I use Davies to rank that variety in terms of coins that Spink list and then use Spink to find a value. For example, Davies gives the 1923 florin mule a value of 120, which places it in value between the 1926 and 1925 florins but closer to the 1925. Therefore, interpolating the values in Spink 2012 gives a value of ~£200 in EF and ~£450 in UNC. Does that sound about right?

I take the Davies value and divide it by the common value to get a multiplication factor. For the 1923 mule it is 4.3. So that gives me £17.20, £34.40, £150.50 and £322.50. Which reminds me I must get my spare VF-GVF on ebay.

Unfortunately, there are too many imponderables. One of the biggest is how well known the variety is, which in turn creates demand which is the all-important factor of course. You would have to rank a variety in terms of :

1. how long-standing is it?

2. how recognisable is it?

3. how much research and published material is there, e.g. a Freeman, Peck, ESC, Davies?

4. are there any auction values for it?

Your example of the 1923 mule florin depends on how Davies arrived at his price and what changes in the market there have been since then. It's probably much rarer than the 1925 florin, but wouldn't match its price.
