palves Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Any idea what is this? I came across this picture in a Portuguese forum. They claim it is a fake based on the date. But I am wondering if there is another story behind because that would be a very silly error...(This picture is not mine) Quote

The last year to have Victoria's veiled head on the obverse was 1901. It should have Edward VII on the obverse. If only all fakers were as stupid. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 A fake. I've also seen wrong dates on fake Victorian sovereigns. I think they may have been made for trade use in Arabic countries and/or other parts of the world. They are usually good gold, but not as fine as 22ct. On the other hand, it could be modern and Chinese and not made of gold at all! Quote
palves Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 an early date....possible gaming tokenDon't think it is a token. Correct size, correct weight (accurate at 0.1 gram) and it seems to be gold... So either a silly fake or a jewellery medal... Quote
VickySilver Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Yes, I have seen these somewhere...Hmmm, where??? Beirut conglomerations? Possibly. Quote

So either a lower quality gold or the core is not gold, just the outside layer. do not know. IF it is gold, i just do not get it... Quote

The "wrong date" would prevent (or so it may have been assumed) accusations of counterfeiting. Quote
