i would just like to know; What is so 'Extremely Rare' about the 1953 2+A farthing?

Posted

Like all other numismatic rarities, it's down to mintage. All the others were minted more than 2+A.

They would not have recorded the mintage figures for the different types. They were just catagorised in the mintage of 1953.

so it will probably have a mintage of far less then 10,000 to be classed as ext. rare?

The 1953 2+A may be rare in comparison to the other 1953 farthing varieties, but I'm not certain that this justifies use of the adverb "extremely". There always seems to be an example of two of this variety being offered for sale. I would think that one characteristic of an extremely rare coin is that it seldom if ever appears for sale. Chris...as a dealer perhaps you might have a different perspective on this. Any comments?

Yes, that's probably part of the properties of being an extremely rare coin. But I think the mintage is more important than how often it comes up for sale.

Well, not nessesarily william...the 1951 penny has a mintage of 120,000 but there are usually many examples for sale...
