Mat Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I have listed my Harthacnut penny on ebay:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290539735740I have always thought this penny was Spink 1170, one of the Danish types, however another ebayer has emailed me the following:Hello! I apology but I must correct You on the Item. This item is not a Harthacnut, it is a coin minted during struggles between Magnus the god and Sven Estridsen. The item is of course interesting but the price is considerabale lower than for a Harthacnut coin. Similar item went for 300 on spink auction Dec 2009. I had made an offer which in my opinion reflect the market price. Can anyone confirm the above? I am inclined to believe it is still a Spink 1170 as I have had a few of these over time all bought and sold as Harthacnut.ThanksMat Quote
£400 for a Penny ? Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Not that my opinion's worth a can of beans, but it doesn't look too much like the 1170 picture in my copy of Spink ? (2004)The lettering doesn't tie up to my eye, mind you, it then goes on to say Danish types of various designs, which means what exactly ?An email to the British Museum perhaps ? Quote

£400 for a Penny ? Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 To be honest, given the subject matter, I'd be surprised if he was wrong. If it was me, I'd de-list it and send a scan to the BM asking for clarification, they are pretty good at things like that (and it's free) Quote

Cheers 400.I just hope he is not trying to catch me out, he told me it is only worth £300 and made me an offer of £400 which I declined, so he has come back and offered £550! Quote
azda Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Sounds a but iffy if he's saying its worth 300 and upping it to 550 don't ya think. I'd Stick to what you think it is, sounds like he's trying to get it cheap to me Quote
azda Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Plus now He only has 1 more chance at an offer, so if its 700 quid then ya Know He was trying to pull a fast one Quote

You can also try the Fitzwilliam museum they also will offer advice/identification, and are generally very helpful (or so I have been told). Quote
