1797 Cartwheel Penny

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Wondered if anyone could answer a possibly silly question for me? I've just been given a 1797 cartwheel penny by a relative, and the obv and rev are pointing to different ends of the coins, ie they stay upright when rotated on the east/west axis. Is this right? Never seen one up close before, so just thought I'd ask.

Thanks, BS

The die axis should be opposite ends to each other. IE when the kings head is upright britannia should point downwards.
