these are two 1913 pennies i own and the bottom one appears to have another number under the 3 and would like to hear the opinions of others and if they would agree or not and if anyone agrees that an error may have occured what the number under the 3 might be and any opinions as to its rareity would also be appreciated

Hard to tell, can you do a high res scan?

If you look carefully, what appears to have have happened is that a chunk has come out of the lower 3. It's a piece missing. The question is, did it happen at striking which would make it an interesting (but probably not valuable) misstrike, or has been gouged out since?

hi i know what you are getting at with the chunk but would pinching out after striking account for the leg sticking out at the back of the lower 3 in the middle some friends of mine suggested that it may possibly be a backwards £ sign

It looks to me like a piece of metal moved when the back of the 3 was dug out by a blow. Can't be a error as there is metal missing, errors cause matel to be left behind like a dot.

I think it may have been gouged on both the upper (less) and lower (more) portions of the right hand side of the 3, which might account for the 'leg' sticking out.

Don't forget also - there are two reverses of 1913 penny, and it is entirely possible that the style of the 3 varies (it's so slight that at normal magnification you wouldn't really notice anything).

1913 dates 1913dates.jpg

there is a difference in spacing and the relationship of numerals to border beads, but font is essentially the same to me

Very slight difference David (to my eyes) : the lower 3 is higher which overall gives a slightly slenderer look to it, where the top one is reduced ever so slightly in height, giving a more compact appearance. (The bottom one is the first reverse?)

Yes I agree, just slapped two on the scanner last night, in response to your intervention. Bottom one is the first reverse

I was unaware till now of the difference in the date alignment with the border beads, and I'm assuming for now that these are consistent in the George V series... another trawl through the duplicates box beckons

:)
