Aethelred I penny

Hi to everyone on the forum!

I recently inherited this coin from my Grandad. I have done a little research on the web and through my standard coin books but due to there not being many coins from this era, I have been unable to find out how much it would be worth.

Please correct me if I don't have this right, but it's a Type A lunettes coin of Aethelred I 865/866 - 871 AD. Moneyer - Ethelred.

I would be gratefull of any information as to its value. Also if anyone can point me in the right direction for the best place to sell it.

You need to look at the Spink boom which I dont have immediately to hand for value ... it looks like a good condition penny to me and Paul Dawson of Spinks I would suggest might buy it, or David Guest at CNG. I'll look up Spinks value tonight and post unless someone beats me to it!

I'm not an expert on early coins, but Spink lists only two types for Aethelred :

1055 Moneyer's name in three lines (yours)

1056 ditto, in four lines (rare)

Mine is the 2005 Spink so adjust for inflation, but ... Fine = £350 Very Fine = £900. I would suggest yours is at least VF but has some light pitting/corrosion which would affect things. At a rough estimate I'd say yours could be worth £750, maybe more.

Others here will advise you on where and how to sell, and perhaps give a more up-to-date valuation.

I'm not a hammered specialist (there are one or two in the forum) but in my view this is the sort of coin that ought to be sold at auction. Condition looks better than fine to me, but as I said I am not a hammered expert. I won't offer any opinion on the value, save to say that it will be quite a bit. Incidentally, there is an Alfred the Great penny which is almost identical (Ethelred was his elder brother) but prices are not that dissimilar.
