£400 for a Penny ? Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Welcome Frank. Not an expert on this, or anything else for that matter, but it may well be that you have a penny from the Norman era (1066-1154) there. It certainly looks to be the right kind of 'foot' to the cross. However, I think I might just be able to make out the remains of the design in the fields which could make it a penny of Henry II (1154-1189).If I'm right, that would be worth about £75 in that condition. To be certain, you'd need to take it in to a dealer, but then you already knew that.Maybe someone else will have a more informed opinion, if they do, I'm thinking Spink 1337-1339 ?Keep drinking the cider. HistoricCoinage Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Hi,I'm pretty sure its norman...maybe william I/II?I, for one, do not think that it is English. It looks to be similar to the 'Crusader-style' coins that were prevalent in France, so perhaps 13th/14th Century France. Quote
