Russ777 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Hi just got this one in my change today.2005 one pound coin with a large lip of metal over T of Elizabeth. Would be interested to know how this may have happened have not seen this one before.Would anyone be interested in making an offer? Thanks Russ777 Quote
RLC35 Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Russ, You've probably heard about "die cracks" where the crack shows on the surface of a finished coin...well what you have is a "die break." That is a condition where part of the die has actually broken, and come off, and is missing when the coin is struck. I am sure the coin presses were stopped very soon after this coin was struck, so that the broken die could be replaced. Thanks for sharing. Quote

Something that may prove this is that on Ebay there is the same type/date £1 coin 2005! with an error so I am watching that one, also a semi circle type error this time with a chunk of metal missing on bridge side. So I am watching how high that one goes! Perhaps these should be recorded in catalogues?? What do people think??Russ777 Quote
Hussulo Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Yes pretty cool error. It is a die brake, the ones on the edge are sometimes refereed to as a die cud. Quote
Russ777 Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 How much might this be worth??Thanks Russ777 Quote
scott Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 a small, premium probably.., cuds generally not worth much, die breaks definatly worth more. i got a 2008 with no bottom dot on obverse, thats my fave error Quote
Hussulo Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Perhaps worth around £5 to the right buyer. The thing is most error collectors only go after or pay big money for the more major and striking errors like brockages and off centre strikes.I find them all fascinating though. Quote
