Rory Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Hi, is this a gothic crown? how much do you reckon its worth? sorry if the pictures arent great, it looks a lot more silvery then that in real life.Thanks. Quote
azda Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Hi Rory your coin certainly looks like a Gothic Florin, take a look at the 11th page in Coin Aquisition of the Week, i have just purchased one myself, then tell us what the roman numerals are around the OBV that will tell us the date. Quote
Rory Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 "decus et tutamen anno regni undecimo"Thanks for the help azda, let me know if theres any other details you need. Quote
Rory Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 sorry mate, on the obverse it says victoria dei gratia britanniar REG F D. Quote
Rory Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 i reckon i probably gave you the wrong info, MDCCCXLVIIyou're making me learn stuff about coins azda! Quote

Value some way north of £1k as long as it isn't a forgery which is quite possible. Quote

Rory Posted March 1, 2010 Author Posted March 1, 2010 I assumed it was a crown coz its the same size as all my other crowns. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to look at it and for giving me some feedback, and in particular to asda, for now i know what obverse and reverse are and how to translate roman numerals. I'm just wondering, as i noticed today that you can buy replicas of this coin, how do you tell the difference between replica and origionals: are they marked as replicas? Quote

The photo shows the type of toning I would have expected from the genuine article but you can never be absolutely certain based on a photograph.I don't know whether any 'genuine' marked reproductions have been made but most are 'genuine forgeries' and emenate from the Far East, made with the sole intention of defrauding collectors. azda Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 I agree with Red, if its been passed down through a family member or you have had it for quite a number of years, chances are that it will be original. The owner of this forum has a book out on British coins, its called Collectors Coins GB, its only about 7 pounds and could probably get it from WH Smiths or so, that will give you weights and a guide on prices for your coins. If you have many foreign coins then i'd suggest the Krause book of world coins, its a hefty book at around 1200/1400 pages long, but it also goes by Centuries 1800-1900 1900-2000 so beware what you buy, maybe look through the most common century and purchase that book. If you have any German coins, Kaisserreich etc i have a book for that, so you're ok there. Quote
