Hi, can anyone recommend a good first book on coin collecting. Im not after a book on values of coins, more of a starter guide to coin collecting. Ive had a look on amazon and there's a book called "Coin Collecting for dummies" that looks alright, but apparently its mostly about collecting american coins. Does anyone know a similar book based more on british coin collecting? Thanks, Rob

There is something called "The Coin Year Book" published by the company that brings out Coin News. Although it does have "blue pages" devoted to coin values, it also has general tips and information. It's not a systematic "beginners' guide" as such, but I'm not sure there is such a thing in Britain?

There is also some advice for newcomers at the front of the Spink "Standard Catalogue", and your local library's Reference Section should keep a copy of that.

I wouldn't touch the dummies book.

Learn from this forum and the Net.

Peckchris suggestion on CYB is true but if you want to specialise try Michael Freemans or Pecks efforts on copper/bronze and maybe Davis for silver.

I will also state that Rotographic books that Chris turns out are excellent....they cover valuation, varieties, grading history and are all competitivly priced.

Is there anything specific series you are interested in?

Regards

Peter

Im a complete newbie and havent got a clue really. I just wanted a book with an overview on coin collecting (ie how to look after and organise coins ect) and maybe a recomendation of something easy to collect for a beginner. This is what the dummies book is but as its an american book its mostly about collecting american coins. Someone recommeded "Collecting Coins" by P. Frank Purvey but i cant find any information about it.

As for what to collect, most advisers would suggest you don't specialise too early (unless you already have a clear idea of a collecting theme). Collect widely until you've got a particular interest defined. But always go for quality, according to your budget - then if you want to sell later, you'll have a better chance of making a good sale.

Organising is always a personal thing. Storage advice you can get from lots of places, including this forum. There are already good topics on the subject here.
