chris Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 hello everyoneone of my latest finds while metal detecting is this rather strange medal of some type saying state prohibitation. now i am led to believe that there was an alcohol ban or something like that anywaythe front of this item has a rose at the bottom, a coat of arms which is the same as a shield back sovereign and three figures with the sun beaming down on them.ther reverse of this item is a picture of the globe which is round so it must have been made after the 1600sif anyone could shine a little light on this coin/medal id be chuffed to bitsthanks Quote

The shield, as you say, is the royal arms which you see on many reverses, with two sets of 3 leopards en passant plus an Irish harp; the 4th quarter should be the Scottish lion, but it's hard to make out. The allegorical figures of Faith Hope & Charity look very 19th Century, as does the rose symbol. So my deduction - which doesn't allow for the word "State" (that sounds American!) - would be a medallion from the late 19th Century when the Temperance Movement was very strong. If, that is, alcohol is really the theme. An interesting find, despite the condition. Quote
