1936 Penny Variety?

Hi,

I am wanting some help to find out whether i have something or not.As a child i collected coins on a small scale and have recently decided to sell them.

Going through all my old pennies ive come across a 1936 penny with what appears to be a 5 just to the left of the 3 in the date.Ive checked in the few books i have and on the net but cant find anything on it.The coin has a strange darkness to it and i read that some of the 1935 pennies were artificially darkened so im wondering if they have struck it on a 1935 penny.I haven't got a magnifier so am going on eyesight only.I can get a pic of it on here if anyone is intrigued

Any advice would be appreciated

It does look as though there is something there. It's in the wrong place for a 6 over 5. saying that, it's in the wrong place for any legitimate number. Verystrange.

The "darkness" you refer to is the classic green patina from a coin that has been some time in the ground. I can see evidence of the typical corrosion that this typically produces, for example a few random 'dots' where there shouldn't be any. It's fairly significant that on the first picture, where the green is most evident, the 5 doesn't show up at all. It looks like it is probably a "shadow" effect from some corrosion in the date area, though that's just a 'best guesstimate'.

Even if it is a '5', which is debatable, it could potentially be compared with the 1863 pennies with numbers below the dates, like the one with the '5' below the date, which sold for £18,000 and was properly verified etc. No British coin has ever been sold for that much and whoever looks at that listing will just laugh at you Steve and click on the back button straight away! In fact, if it is the real thing (which, again, is debatable) you may well of ruined your chances of ever selling it because people will think.....oh here comes the £10m joker, hide, quickly!

Do the homework properly Steve, before you make a fool of yourself like that. Send it to Dr Kevin Clancy at the Royal Mint and see what he says. Or send it to this man http://www.coinauthentication.co.uk/ and tell him I sent you.

The only reason ive put that price on is so it comes up early on the high price search to get peoples attention.Obviously even if it is real i wouldnt even expect 1% of that amount.If you bothered to read the comments inside you can see that i want people to message me with their views on it.I am going to get it sent for expert advice and (fingers crossed) it will be authentic

I think your comments were a bit harsh. It was obvious to a mere mortal like me that Steve only put that price on ebay to elicit some responses, to help indentify and/or authenticate the coin.

People come on here for help and advice, so it's not a good advert to see someone being told their a fool!

Oh, calm down....and welcome chocca. Chocca's on the block.

I didn't tell him he was a fool....merely that he was making a fool of himself. No one can sue me for that! Even the most intelligent, smart and knowledgeable man can sometimes make a fool of himself. ;-)

But what serious numismatist would bother contacting a man that has a green coin on ebay, uses not the very best pictures, has feedback of 43, has never sold anything for more than about £20 and starts it at a shade under £10m!? I certainly wouldn't, had I not got to know Steve a little in here first.

Again, i would just like to stress i only put it on to try to get people's views.

You can surely understand that very few 'serious numismatists' get turned on by the thought of searching ebay for george v pennies so i thought this was the best way of getting peoples attention.Obviously some people disagree but to be honest i dont care.

Even, if as expected it doesnt turn out to be a genuine error coin then i wont lose any sleep over it because im HAPPY in my life and il happily keep selling my under £20 coins putting a smile on my little face

Steve...I believe this thread has veered somewhat off-course. It's clear that your asking price is for attention purposes only. That said, Chris' advice to take the coin to an expert to get it authenticated is sound. And if it proves to be authentic then likely a major auction firm would be the best venue for its sale.

Chocca -- Steve is clearly not a fool and the price he set on his auction £9,999,999.00 was obviously for the purpose of bringing attention to the coin --not to scam anyone. He should have the coin examined by someone who can authenticate it and as you say hopefully it will turn out be the genuine article.

Actually, the other day I did seach on ebay for something and ordered it by highest price first. I was looking for a decorative (preferably original) London Street sign. Doing a normal search revealed tons of crud items, key rings, mugs and other junk for tourists. It was only when I ordered it by highest price first did I actually see some real street signs!

I could see the logic in sorting that way if it filtered out the 99% of crud on there, but since some damn good coins start at 99p it ain't gonna work! Sadly you have to crud-watch in order to make sure you haven't missed something good.
