scott Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 and got this out of the 5p tin... for free lol Quote
Coppers Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Two nice farthings -- particularly the 1876-H. Quote
Peter Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 (edited) Farthings ?????? For £2 you can't go wrong. However when serious collecting buy the best you can afford otherwise you end up constantly up grading....Like me Edited October 18, 2009 by Peter Quote
scott Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 true but if you buy on the cheap, any upgrading you do can be topped up with a small profit from the lower grade but yea impulse buy, not going to get a decent bun halfpenny for that money for a while so sure why notand for free, the 1932 is good enough Quote
Peckris Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Good bargain, that halfpenny, scott I think there are two good strategies to buy coins : 1. go for the best and highest grade you can afford 2. look out for bargain basement items like that halfpenny (you'll always be able to sell them on for a bit of a profit). 1949threepence Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 (edited) Book price of a VF 1876H halfpenny is about £10 ~ so you got a bit of a bargain there, Scott. Nice work and nice coin. Edited October 18, 2009 by 1949threepence Quote
scott Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 CCGB says £20, so yea, its aEFrather then VF, VF has more wear on the portrait and brittania Quote
Peter Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 With the toning it would never achieve more than GF/NVF price......OK for £2 though Quote

Sometimes I have to make gaps in my collection just to keep the selling going (so I can buy more coins!), and I don't like doing it, even when I'm selling my worst first. I suppose I'm too much of a collector to ever be a proper dealer... Quote
scott Posted October 19, 2009 Author Posted October 19, 2009 yea i buy all these bargains knowing full well how much profit i can make but i wont sell em lolsome coins you have to get what you are given, i have a clear date 1879 narrow date penny... cant see me seeing another one let alone a better one lol Quote

I love an even dark patina - some of the handsomest coppers/bronzes are almost black. In fact, I even prefer such coins to those EF types with patchy lustre. Quote
