Sylvester Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 Sorry i know Chris was never fussed on us posting pics, but these two coins have got to be posted! (feel free to delete them in a few weeks time)Firstly a denomination i've been dreaming about getting for some time...http://www.omnicoin.com/coin_view.aspx?id=889566and now for something better... william Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Well done Sylvester, hammered gold and some more early milled! Quote
william Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Yes, it is nice...how much? Oh yes, I nearly forgot to ask him that! Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Could anyone tell me why the 1937 proof sovereign is rarer than the other proofs (£5, £2, half sovereign) even though they all have the same mintage of 5001. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Porobaby because sovereigns are collected more and are a more uninterupted series than the other denominations. I had a 1937 Sov a while ago/ Did you know the odd '1' (of 5001) were given to the king? Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Yes I did, is it true that the queen has the largest and most valuable collection of british coins? Quote
Emperor Oli Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 I think you're mixing that up with her stamps which are generally agreed to be the best in the World. Her collection belongs to her however, not the State. Btw, spiffing coins Sylvester! Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 I know that she has some very rare sets such as the 1953 proof set, and am I correct in saying that she has an Edward VIII set as well? Quote
Sylvester Posted May 14, 2004 Author Posted May 14, 2004 Yes, it is nice...how much?Oh yes, I nearly forgot to ask him that! Quarter Noble = £200Sixpence = £57All in all not too bad. Quote

Sylvester Posted May 14, 2004 Author Posted May 14, 2004 well the quarter noble was from Rendal Ingram, and the sixpence was a killer deal from a coin stall in an antiques building in York.I forget the name but i've bough coins from her before, all reasonably priced. Quote
Master Jmd Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 quite a good deal there sylvester, i bet you like them Quote
Sylvester Posted May 16, 2004 Author Posted May 16, 2004 i got some more yesterday! (see here..)http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.c...787&STARTPAGE=1(hope that works for you non-members)At last i have all the 1728s! (except the proof... but you know how it is, i don't intend to get any of the proofs). Quote
Emperor Oli Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 They're cool Sylvester (or should I call you Sylvestius!?) and it does work for non-members. You relly have go on quite a spending spree! Quote
Sylvester Posted May 16, 2004 Author Posted May 16, 2004 They're cool Sylvester (or should I call you Sylvestius!?) and it does work for non-members. You relly have go on quite a spending spree! What can i say? I just love the things. The reason why i've been able to buy these is because i've just sold every single one of my British coins dated 1816 or after to Chris, except for 4 sixpences (1816, 1825, 1826 & 1834), a gothic florin (1864) and a pattern Edward VIII Crown.I'll hang onto the newer six cos i like them. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 Nice! I'm gonna have a spend on some dealers soon with a view to getting half-way to my goal by July and fully completing it by December. It should be fairly easy; it's not that the coins aren't there, it's that the money isn't! Quote
Master Jmd Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 i have just noticed that sixpence virtual tour of yours, very impresive...keep up the good work/spending Quote
Sylvester Posted May 16, 2004 Author Posted May 16, 2004 i've got it the other way around as well, not only is the money not there, but quite frequently neither are the coins. So how many 1710 sixpences have i seen for sale? (none!) [i've seen more decent 1858 sovereigns for sale] Some time i think i should have stuck at collecting shield reverse sovereigns of the London mint, i would have had half of them by now at least. I know one dealer that always have 40 or 50 or so on sale at any one time, mostly in F-GVF. Quote
Sylvester Posted May 16, 2004 Author Posted May 16, 2004 i have just noticed that sixpence virtual tour of yours, very impresive...keep up the good work/spending Cheers! I still haven't added the 1834 one, (and i need a Geo IV type I in at least GEF or preferably AUNC)I've got to update the 1732 Roses and Plumes one, and i've got to add a 1703 VIGO one.Might need a top (not high, but top!) grade Victorian Young head. Then there's just James II and i'll have owned every major type of milled sixpence since Charles II - Elizabeth II.(Despite the fact i've just sold all the post William IV sixpences off)And Chris i've just been browisng through your for sale section and is that 1895 shilling the one i sent you? (just wondered!) Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 16, 2004 Posted May 16, 2004 And Chris i've just been browisng through your for sale section and is that 1895 shilling the one i sent you? (just wondered!) No I don't think so, I think that one may have been from my friend Richard (www.coinsforsale.co.uk). I can't be sure though, I'm rubbish with keeping records of where I get things from! Quote
