A 1799 US Dollar...?

At the local carboot I spotted a guy selling coins. He had a number of them for a couple of quid each and one that caught my eye was a 1799 US dollar. Well, he had two of them, and a 1796 'Trade Dollar'.

I picked them up because they were cheapish and more out of curiousity than anything.

But, alas, too good to be true.

The Trade Dollar, now, is obviously a fake since they never actually started trade dollar until the mid 1800's.

And the 1799 'silver' dollars. Well... easy test, they're magnetic. D'oh!

But still, interesting to have.

If that 1799 was genuine you'd be looking at a thousand pounds worth of coin (if not more)!

The other thing to watch for are the (hundreds or even thousands) of Chinese fakes of these early dollars. And don't get me onto the 1763 shillings fakes which are excellent, but a nightmare for the unwary. And even for the knowledgeable, they are that good.

Actually talking of Chinese fakes the US trade dollar is one of the most copied coins out there.

I might put it on eBay. See if anybody wants a filler coin for their dollar collection. So long as I get back what I paid for it.

The chinese fakes have gotten very good,it has a lot of american collectors worried.That particular fake isnt that good though,its far too porous looking.Theres fakes on ebay now that can fool the best now.Its end result is nobody buys coins from China ..which is ironic as everything else here is made in china.
