Emperor Oli Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Recently, I have seen some, what I consider to be, spam on these boards. To combat this, I thought i'd just give a definition and some examples for us all to follow (not like MJMD's rules) these are simply.....guidelines!What is spamming?Post spamming is where the user posts irrelevant or useless information in order to gain a higher post count. How is my message considered spam?Spam messages are either unrelated to the topic title or are subjective comments about the topic. Example Topic: "Is there a Tony Blair 50p" Spammer: "Yeah that would be nice." Example Topic: "What is this coin?" Spammer: "COME TO MY SITE FOR FREE PORN!!!!"What is double posting?Double posting is typically making one post immediately after another by the same user. The only reason to make a post after another is to add somthing more to the previous post. If this is the case then you are expected to use the EDIT button located to the top right hand corner of your posts. However, due to recent technical difficulties, this isn't always possible, but please check first! Double posting is considered by many as spam. What isn't double posting? It is possible for a post made by member X to appear directly under member X's last post without it being considered double posting. Here member X's post may have been made serveral hours after the last post and so is not considered spam but a fair use of double posting. Also it is possible for identical messages to be made in pairs at the same time due to technical difficulties relating to the internet. Because such identical posts are involuntary and unwanted they are not considered double posting. I must emphasise that I am not setting down rules, I am simply describing in detail what spam (Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages) is. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Oli,Yes, we do tend to deviate, but I think that's just the way things go. I too have noticed irrelevant messages and have in fact deleted the odd brain dead comment.I'm all up for saving server space, so feel free to point out anything irrelevant to me Constable Oli. Perhaps over email. Quote
Master Jmd Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 yes, irrelevent massages are annoying...i hope i havent spammed since the word association topic, if i have then i am sorry...your 'guidelines' are quite nice...but;Spammer: "COME TO MY SITE FOR FREE PORN!!!!"that is not really the spam that this site is currently recieving...Spammer: "Yeah that would be nice."i suppose that would be an 'ok' post if it said 'no there isnt' after it... Emperor Oli Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 Spammer: "COME TO MY SITE FOR FREE PORN!!!!"that is not really the spam that this site is currently recieving...Yes, I was just using it as an example. Quote
william Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Example Topic: "Is there a Tony Blair 50p" Spammer: "Yeah that would be nice." Tut tut Oli, you forgot your question mark after Tony Blair 50p, now that is a true crime! Quote
Emperor Oli Posted May 27, 2004 Author Posted May 27, 2004 P.S Posting also just to agree with a previous post and not post content would be spam too. Sorry if I'm getting on my high horse but there's people doing it on other forums too Quote

Half Penny Jon Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 Innocent until proven guilty However, there may be sufficient evidence for a very strong case against me! Quote
Sylvester Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 The pair of you are actually doing it now... Oli counts useless off topic banter about who does do something and who does not, to be spam too. He'll tell you just as much himself. Quote
Geoff T Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 I think the solution is quite simple. Now that we have a members only area, there's no reason why we shouldn't have an adults only one as well Don't you agree Mr. Moderator? Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 27, 2004 Posted May 27, 2004 Mmmm, that would be controversial Geoff, I don't know how you come up with these ideas. Quote
Master Jmd Posted May 28, 2004 Posted May 28, 2004 I think the solution is quite simple. Now that we have a members only area, there's no reason why we shouldn't have an adults only one as well Don't you agree Mr. Moderator? yes, but people could go to their profile and change their birth date Quote
william Posted May 28, 2004 Posted May 28, 2004 How do you we aren't adults? How do you know we are not lying to you? Wait, Geoff has met me, but it could go for the other 'child' members Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted May 28, 2004 Posted May 28, 2004 Correct, I might be Dr. Nicholson in disguise! Quote
