Master Jmd Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 are there any modern coins (1p - £2) that have a rarer value? (eg: open '3' 1903 penny, is there a open '3' modern coin...ect...) Quote
william Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 Well I only know of two. That 1983 penny with the New Pence legend that caused a massive rumour, but you are unlikely to find any of them in your change!! Also, the 1985 £1 is pretty scarce, lowest mintage by a long way... Quote
Master Jmd Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 Also, the 1985 £1 is pretty scarce, lowest mintage by a long way... i never new that, i have one of those in my 'modern coin' collection, and i also had one in my bus fare Quote
william Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 (edited) Cough 1982 Twopence cough coughYou're wrong, read this: http://www.predecimal.com/newpence.htmWithout any exceptions all of the 1982 coins had 'Two Pence' on the back. However, and this is where the confusion comes from, in some years of the early 80's no Two pence coins were issued for general circulation and the 637,100 1983 dated coins that were produced all went into special sets containing one of each coin from that year. In a few of those sets the 2p coin was struck with the older ('New Pence' type) reverse by mistake and is indeed very rare. Edited April 29, 2004 by william Quote
Master Jmd Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 Also, the 1985 £1 is pretty scarce, lowest mintage by a long way... i found thison the royal mint...it shows that the 1985 £1 is not that scarce... Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 Yes but you said rumour, which that was Quote
william Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 (edited) I'm right, admit it!!Edit: typo Edited April 29, 2004 by william Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 There is nothing to admit, as I meant it to be a rumour. I thought basic logic would have seen to that but obviously not. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 i found thison the royal mint...it shows that the 1985 £1 is not that scarce...How ironic! Not only is it not a rare issue, it has one of the largest mintage figures in recent years! Quote
Sylvester Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 that's because he meant the 1988 £1 coin! Quote
Sylvester Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 i see 1985s every day, they are not rare, infact i see more 85's than i do 84s and you know how common they are, just behind 1983s. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 Ah looking at the stats that would figure Quote
Sylvester Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 nothing as low as the 1992 50p though! If only i had known when they were circulating.Although if you're looking for the rarer ones, you want to be getting the dates that were not produced for circulation. As the ones that were produced for circulation have proof versions, and normal versions both for UNC sets and the few million or so for circ. The ones that weren't only have the first one, like 1972s, although i think 1980s ten pences are always a good place to start. william Posted April 30, 2004 Posted April 30, 2004 Sorry about that, I was trying to decide between 1988 and 1985, and tried guessing the 1985 sorry! Quote
