Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 Thanks, I hope I do get it because if I don't then I won't get another chance for about at least a year. Quote
Sylvester Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 Coincraft's price in 2000 was £95 in UNCI dunno whether that's for lustre or not. But Coincraft tend to state the prices at the top end of the expected market.Spinks/Seaby's may well be lower, but they always give coins with full lustre in the top grades.I'd say no more than £100. Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 In Spink it says £125, why shouldn't I bid any more than £100? Quote
william Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 Thanks, I hope I do get it because if I don't then I won't get another chance for about at least a year. Yep, those low tide varieties ain't common! Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 It would be especially difficult to get another one in the grade I want. If I get this one then the rest will be a piece of cake to get. Quote
william Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 In Spink it says £125, why shouldn't I bid any more than £100? Well ,I think the Spink prices are pretty high compared to other reference books. For example Coin Yearbook 2004 value it at £100 in UNC, British Coin Market Valus 2004 value it at £80 in UNC, and Spink 2003 value it at £100, you see what I mean? Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 Yeh I can see what you mean, I think Spink may make up their own prices in order to boost sales. Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 I know that Colin Cooke sold the one from Dr. Nicholson for £165 and that one had a stain on the reverse. Quote
Sylvester Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 I know that Colin Cooke sold the one from Dr. Nicholson for £165 and that one had a stain on the reverse. Firstly i think Colin's prices are a bit high.Secondly, that coin has a pedigree because it was owned by a well known collector and will thus command a premium.Thirdly as i stated earlier Spinks prices are for coins with full lustre, that 1902 you showed does not have full 100% lustre, and thus will be worth less than £125.But if you want to spend £130 on it who am i to stop you, afterall it may well go up in value anyhow, next years catalogue may say £130. Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 I doubt I can afford that much, I definately won't be going over £100 Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 If you could buy it how much would you pay for it? Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 Are you sure it is acutally uncirculated? The hair below-right the ear looks slightly flat, as does the majority of his beard but maybe it's just me! Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 It may have gone into circulation for a short period of time. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 I'd grade it AUNC personally - it's a heckuva lot though for a penny! Sniping will win it though Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 I'd grade it AUNC personally - it's a heckuva lot though for a penny! Sniping will win it though Its a halfpenny, and who is Sniping? Quote
william Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 I'd grade it AUNC personally - it's a heckuva lot though for a penny! Sniping will win it though I think I have to agree with Oli on this one, that hair does look a little dodgy. I would now grade it AUNC/UNC Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 The guy who's selling it has a complete run of half penny's from 1860-1902LT in BU! Quote
william Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 The guy who's selling it has a complete run of half penny's from 1860-1902LT in BU! Now that's an achievement! Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 No, Penny Master, sniping ain't a person, it's a thing you do, particularly if you have a broadband connection. About 45-60secs before the end of the auction, put your bid in (snipe) and hopefully the previous bidder won't have time to place a higher one et voila! The coin is yours (this practice is frowned upon by many and I hate it when i'm caught out by sniping but it's a good way to win auctions). Quote
Half Penny Jon Posted April 24, 2004 Author Posted April 24, 2004 Oh, that is what you mean, well, you learn a new thing every day. Plus, I can snipe it in the last 10 seconds because I have a Broadband connection! Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 I wouldn't leave 10secs - the Ebay server is very fickle with me at any rate "Re-enter" this "Press" blah blah blah. Quote
Sylvester Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 There is always the method i used to employ on occasions, put a stupidly high bid on, you rarely get out bid... although sometimes you do!Once when i was feeling flush with cash, there was a coin worth about £15, currently going at about £8.So i sticks a bid on of £30 and strolled off (thinking they'll give up at £20), checked back later some idiot had bid £35!But hey i made them pay more so it was worth it.
