Chris Perkins Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 It's not a token it's a forgery of a shlling. Pièces de monnais faux!It would have been silvered originally so it looked like a real one. "honi soit qui mal y pense" was on all shillings at that time. Quote
Red Riley Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Okay, it's an 1817 shilling of a type which technically was still legal currency (for 5p) until 1990. This particular type of coin was issued at a time when the coinage was being completely modernised and so a very large number were produced; values are consequently low.N.B. There are quite a large number of contemporary forgeries of this design. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 Yes, if the actual colour is silver then it's probably a real one...it does look very brassy. Quote
scottishmoney Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 But don't doff it off if it is a brass counterfeit, they have a value as a collectors item. There are enough of them that they have a market value and I know of a couple of people that specialise in them. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 24, 2008 Posted February 24, 2008 I have a few in my forgery collection. GIII shillings are probably the most common silver coin forgery. In that sort of condition it's just worth a couple of pounds. Quote
