Richard2 Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 I was playing with my new toy i had for xmas,a low powered microscope and came across this penny that i had recently dug up and noticed the B of Brittania slightly lower than the other letters, as can be seen in the picture. Is this unusual or fairly common occurance , thanks in advance, Richard. Quote

I would be more inclined to say that the R is rotated rather than the B lower although I'm no expert on vicky pennies. I find your microscope much more interesting, what is it? Quote

Mine is the DM2 and costs about £62 plus vat and postage. I was able to photograph thro' the lense with a normal digital camera to get picture of the penny, but there are proper attachments you can buy.Take a look. Quote
Richard2 Posted February 5, 2008 Author Posted February 5, 2008 Anyone else out there who might have an opinion on this coin? Heres a of picture of it. I think the B is lower Quote

I think the B is lowerI have compared your photograph with an 1863 penny in my collection. I have to say that they look pretty much identical even down to the slight distortion of the inner beading above the B. I also checked two different 1864s and an AU 1862 and to be honest there is very little difference. The lettering on Victorian bronze is often way off line - perhaps they didn't use a protractor!
