Guest nelly Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Hi I am new to this forum and am a bit lost at recognising British coins. A friend has found a 1902 Edward 7 gold coin. It is very small but has all the markings of a Sovereign. It has Edwards profile on one side and George slaying dragon on the other. But it only measures 13ml in diameter, about the size of a threepence. This coin was found on a beach with a metal detector, it has had some weathering with the writing unreadable. Hope someone knows this coin and let me know what it is thanks Nelly Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 A sovereign measures about 21mm in diameter whereas a half-soveregin measures about 19mm so I think that it is a fake or play money coin.Any photos?Kindest Regards,Clive. Quote
Hussulo Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 it has had some weathering with the writing unreadable. Are you sure its gold? The reason I ask is that gold does not normally tend to weather much at all (even in salt water). It may be a token or gold plated. Do you have any pictures you could post? Quote
