1990 5p varieties?

Nik you can count the number of round 5 pence and square 5 pence you have is all up to you.

I just looked through my nice ones (all three of them) and they were all rounded.

I did have one of each 1991 though and the rounded one is quite variable as you go round the coin. Some of the blocks were much squarer than others.

Do you think this could happen if the coin is very slightly off centre when struck? I wonder if the variation is in the collar, the blanks or the striking (or something else)?

Or a worn die combine with thin flan,for me if even it is a thin flan the edge should also be sharper if the die is sharp.

Or worn die,thin flan,and worn in circulation.

Or their are 2 different die use one use in early days thats is sharp and the second one for latter use and long and worn now is round that may came common.

About the 1991 5 pence their is a close and open circle in 1991?

I just saw one maybe Im mistaken.

On 1990 I think the circle is overlaping maybe through production.

But on 1992 clearly it is open about the boundaries of the open and close 9 if it exist will have to wait few more time

Hello all, first post, though I have been lurking here for some time. Anyway back to Chris's question. I am in the habit of chucking any loose change I have each day, apart from pounds and 50p into a box, so I thought it was about time I emptyed it again to see what was what.

So for change collected between c.Jan 2001 and Feb 2007 I have;

1990, 83 round edge and 1 square,

1991, 47 rounded and 0 square,

1992, 28 square and 1 rounded

1993 onwards are all square

I should note that there does appear to be a degree of roundedness, some being markedly more chamfered than others.

no difference on 1990 on 9 here is the picture.

But on 1991 I think their are.

Close nine is for rouns 1991 and open 9 is for square

On 1992 is quite far in 1990 round to have one if it is close it is a find a other rest of date upwards.

I didnt encounter round 1992 hope ard hawk it is close nine have to verify it by the expert like chris on hand and maybe list it on the book if it is not recorded

I am currently working my way through a 3Kg bag of 5Ps collected from change between c.1993 and late 2000 in and around the City, and am looking out for Josie's 1991 date variety. No luck so far.

The fourth one I think is round edge open 9 if it exist dint find one.

Lucky you ardhawk you have 1992 and you are base in GB lots of coins to look for its spring old ones maybe on the place of drawers in GB or in carbooth.

How about 1993 to 1997 their is a propability that this kind of variety exist.

Just a follow up 1993 five pence listed in CCGB and world catalog 2006 are from sets only, nearly 57,000 that will be a hindrance for finding some in circulation.

Did anyone found one in circulation.
