Ch2toWm4 Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 Here is a 1696 halfpenny has the "I" and "A" transposed. (No, I don't deliberately look for low-grade coins). I am aware that it may be a contemporary counterfeit. I seem to remember that Isaac Newton was prosecuting counterfeiters at about this time. In any case, this worn coin weighs 138 grains. Peck says that the weight range for this issue is 136.5 to 180.7 grains.http://web.infoave.net/~bsnyder/BRITANNAI.jpghttp://web.infoave.net/~bsnyder/BRITANNAI_inset.jpg Quote
Rob Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 If the tie ribbons and William's throat are OK under the encrustation I would say it is probably genuine because the rest matches all my 1st issue 1/2d detail with the exception of what appears to be a bit of a double chin. This is only slight and may be due to wear.About 3 years ago on ebay there was a 1701 BRITANNAI halfpenny in better grade than this piece. That also looked genuine. Quote
Hussulo Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 (edited) Great find. I have never seen that variety before. Edited January 20, 2007 by Hussulo Quote
