Yes of course, but if you take the basic currency as the Pound (and it's forerunners) then our currency is much older. But you're right of course, decimal put a stop to the real ancient currency in '71.

Although the pound is still a pound! So the question is did it really end?

Well, no, not really, just what goes into it changed! Or did it? So surely a 5p is still a shilling, is it?? The Govt will only let us vote on the Euro when they are sure they cannot loose!

My friend at school told me that we are changing to Euro in ten years...true?

Posted

I wasn't convinced either...

How old was your friend? He doesn't seemed very well informed - has he even heard of the Chancellor's tests? Where did he get this ten years from it seems such an arbitrary number. Grrr. However good ol' Tone may just decide to bypass the public and sign up for the Ewwwwro to please his Euro buddies whilst keeping Bush close at hand. Ahh the machinations of politics

I know someone on another forum, he's either from Germany or the Netherlands and he doesn't seem to think that the UK will join at all.

I hope that's what happens!

So do i! I don't want to have to wait 30 odd years to get the coins in circ to the same age our oldest coins are now.

Imagine how mundane and boring the euro would be...

Have you seen the so-called "official" patterns? Not a patch on ours - even IRB's portrait!

Well, how about if we had old coins as part of the design, like the 1 euro from Greece? I really like the Athenian owl...

Let's see, we could have George and the dragon, the royal arms.... or even long and short cross euros!

Yes i like the Athenian Owls! But you just know they'd modernise it and ruin it.

Not fussed on St George, i think that design has been around long enough as it is.

Yeah i'd like some shield stuff back (like the Geo V half crowns of the 1910s), and Britannia both sitting variety and Edward VII florrie variety. I'd also like a gothic florin look on one of the coins, and how about Una and the Lion, or the three graces?

Or even the enthroned monarch of the original gold sovereigns?

Of how about something like one of those original gold florins!!! Now that would be B)

Sorry to dampen the enthusiasm (!) but I think they'd attempt to recreate the classics and fail.....miserably. IMHO nowadays, the engravers seem to rely more and more on colour and holograms on coins which overshadows the engraving. I don't think they would be a patch on the originals

Who said anything about copying the originals? I want the orginals in circ now!!! :D

Don't we all! Oooh wait - maybe they still have the original dies? Gothic florins for all!!!!

I've seen fantasy gold modern restrike Gothic coins recently. They were not quite as good as the original, but they were bloody close, I can tell you.

I have 'Fantasy' coins, wouldn't give bullion worth for them!

I always wanted a gold florin of Edward III, how many's left in existence about 7?

Oh and i'd love a Henry III gold penny! *drool* my childhood dream that coin.

Well it's one of the better grades i've seen...

I'd say GVF at least, wouldn't give it quite EF because those fleur de lis on the reverse are a bit worn.

I'd say about £250-£300, selling on Ebay it'd fetch a little more, selling to a dealer you'd get less, usually about £220-240

On Ebay these things go mad, beyond all sense sometimes, and you might even get £350 for it.

Big :D:D

Thanks for that Sylvester, you have made my day.

Thought about a tun plus a bit for the Certificate of Authenticity.

I thought it was a rusty button when I excavated it from the sea bed.

Cheers

Thanks for the valuation on the Half Guinea.

It made $575 US = about £320 on ebay.

I was well pleased with that.

Thanks again

Cheers
