Guest Kay Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 I found what looks like a coin, it has the date "1797" printed on the edge. It has what i can make out to be "GEORGIUS" then what looks like three "111" s then D.G.REX. printed on the rim of the one side, with indented markings that look like an arrow a moon a heart a shell & another bigger arrow head, then on the other side of the coin, it has the date as above & "BRITANNIA" printed on the rim & has an indented shape which resembles a four leaf clover, it looks the picturte of a womans head in the centre. also it looks like an out of shape six sided coin.i found this coin 20 years ago and was wondering if anyone could help. Enclosed i have pictures they're not that clear sorry but they where the best i could do. look forward to hearing from you thank you. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 Ok what you have is either a Cartwheel Twopence or penny (we'd need measurements to know for sure). If you can register, then you will be able to attach pictures. FYI, the "woman" is Britannia and she's holding a ten- or eleven-leaf wreath. Oh and it's meant to be circular Quote
Guest kay Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 thank you very much, the measurements are 1 1/2" , here are some pictures for you. is it actually worth anything Quote
Emperor Oli Posted March 23, 2004 Posted March 23, 2004 From whati can see (and that's very little), it is in terrible condition. In my view, it isn't worth a nickel Quote
Guest kay Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 ok thank you very much sorry for bothering you Quote
Chris Perkins Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 What amazing pictures! I couldn't even recognise any of that as a Cartwheel coin! Condition is king, so, value is probably low. Perhaps it's a fake Cartwheel coin, generally the real ones stay circular. Quote
PAUL.J Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 Because the Cartwheel coinage was made of copper they are relatively soft and easily dented etc. I once heard from an elderly relative that because such coins were large and heavy they were used in a game that involved throwing them against a wall. (Just the really worn ones I hope!!). Not sure if this is true but if so, this piece could have won many a game!! Quote
william Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 Cartwheel twopences are so thick, that they can't even fit in capsules!! Quote
