william Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 also how can i clean this coin up, its a bit dirty, or is it best to leave it? If you clean/polish your coin it will lose any value it would have had, unless it is extremely rare. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 also how can i clean this coin up, its a bit dirty, or is it best to leave it?You can rinse it to get dirt off if it's caked in rubbish Quote

Chris Perkins Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 Then it's either a guinea, or a fake guinea.Value of course depends on if it's real and what condition it's in. If it is real it'll be worth at least £55 for gold content. You need to let me see a picture to assess. Where are you?Either email me, or register on here and post one. Quote

That legends no right for a real one, it should be M B F ET H R L B D S R I A TH ET EOr letters to that effect, that's off of the top of my head. Quote
william Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 Yeah, it's M.B.F.ET.H.REX.F.D.B.ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T.ET.E if i'm not mistaken. Quote

Chris Perkins Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 You're right, I always take that legend with a pinch of salt because people always write it wrong, start in the wrong place or the letters are too worn, so they guess. You need to post a picture Karen. Quote
Guest karen Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 .....register!!! ok, photo, not very good but i tried Quote

Chris Perkins Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 Looks brass to me! And the portraits were always awful, but that one looks especially crude. Quote
PAUL.J Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 I agree. Definitely an imitation spade guinea. Very common, used as gaming counters and advertising tokens etc. Lots of different varieties. Produced over a long period of time. I know some people who have collected lots of different types. Quite interesting really. Some have legends such as 'in memory of the good old days' or fantasy lettering rather than the titles you would expect to find on the real thing.I have very fond memories of imitation spade guineas!! One was amongst a small collection of coins given to me when I was a kid by my grandfather - I remember thinking how old it was!! It was this that started me collecting. So......you never know!!
