coinpictures Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 I received an NGC MS63 1844 E/N Half Farthing today, and I cannot ascertain for certain whether or not NGC got it right. To my eye this coin looks simply like a repunched E rather than E over N. The pictures I've found online (none of them super close up) of the E/N variety show the crossbar of the N being obliterated by the middle stem of the E, which this does not have. Also, there's no trace where the right leg of the N should be...I have a return privilege, but it's a short window.Any help would be appreciated. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 Going by the Colin Cooke example here:http://www.colincooke.com/coinpages/halffarthing.htm(you've probably seen it, and it's not a closeup)I'd say send it back, yours looks very different. Quote
Rob Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 It's not E/N. See attached pic. a bit blurred but the features clear. Quote
Gary Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 (edited) I agree, not E over N but a repunched or recut E. The top underside of the E can be seen protruding below the repunched E. The " I " also looks to be recut. See enlarged scan. Edited August 2, 2006 by Gary Quote
