Unknown Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 My physio has givem me a few coins that his grand mother is keeping to know the value of them, I have used GBCC 2006 to see the value of them, but I have found a problem with the coin mentioned in the topic. In the book there are 2 different examples, "'1' right of tooth" and "'1' is directly above tooth', now, does anyone have a pic of both cases so I can compare and differenciate?I don't know what the "tooth" means... so any explanation would be apreciated, thanks! guyincog Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Tooth means the beads around the border.Look at the date - the '1' will either be directly above a bead, or slightly to one side. The latter is very common. Quote
Rob Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Tooth means the beads around the border.Look at the date - the '1' will either be directly above a bead, or slightly to one side. The latter is very common. The former is decidedly uncommon. The Adams penny collection didn't contain one which suggests the R9 rarity given by Freeman may be a bit out. Quote
custard1966 Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Michael Gouby has helpful pictures herehttp://www.michael-coins.co.uk/BP%201909%2...20varieties.htmHe reckons there are 6 of the rare type known Quote
guyincog Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Approx 6 known according to Gouby (good pictures there, too). Which would be R18 (?). OP probably doesn't have one of those, anyway. Quote
Bronze & Copper Collector Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Note the diffferent positioning of the 1 of the date, relative to the tooth beneath it.... Quote
Unknown Posted January 27, 2006 Author Posted January 27, 2006 Thank you very much to all, now I understand what the "tooth" means. I will have to check this one with lots of magnification, but I am not user even if it has any "tooth" left! It is not in that great condition. Quote
Unknown Posted February 9, 2006 Author Posted February 9, 2006 (edited) As you can see there was a reason why I could not see it in this one.I have finally hooked up my scanner to have a look at this penny I mentioned to find out that it didn't really matter, as it is too worn to be able to see if the 1 is above or to the right of the tooth...Oh well.Edit: and I just realiced of what a poor quality my scaner is...
