Guest Dom (UK) Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 Hi there,Now I know as much about coins as I do about brain surgery, That said my Grandmother insisted I recently take charge of some old coins she had and 'do what you like with them'. So I'd love to know the background of any, but I guess what I could do with knowing is whether I need to stick them under the bed or whether they have any significant value. Thanks in advanceDom(Home Counties, UK) Quote
planz666 Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 Hello there,A few thoughts on your post.I think it may stimulate some interest...some of these pieces are outside of my area of interest and experience, however,I would say that the cartwheel penny is probably worth £2-3 The Churchill and Charles & Diana crowns aout £1.50 each, with the Elizabeth 5/- around £5Hope this helps and look forward to reading about thoughts on the othersCheers,Ted Quote
Geordie582 Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 (edited) The first coin seems to be an Elizabeth I shilling of the sixth issue, mint mark 1 and in that condition (fair/fine) I'd say it was worth about £20 in auction. A lot depends upon who wants it on the day! Edited December 18, 2005 by Geordie582 Quote
Peter Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 The obverse of these Elizabeth 1 coins wore very quickly. The reverse is a bit double struck. Its worth £20 if you just want a basic example of a monach/type coin.I believe the Thaler (dated 1780) are still being struck today.A lot of inexperienced coin collectors snap these up thinking they are old. Peter Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 I just read that possibly 800 million Thalers have been struck to date. They can be bought from a reputable dealer for about £7.The Straits settlement dollar is quite nice and worth about £10. Quote
