Misalignment of date numbers on same reverse

Hi, would someone be able to tell me what causes this misalignment of the 2 please? As far as I understand all the reverses are the same for that year.

Very simple: generally in the Victorian series the last two datal digits were punched into the dies by hand ( the master die just being 18--).

That leads to all manner of date spacings and alignments. A quick search of eBay or Richard's penny website, or looking at books like Gouby will show a huge number of different positions. Even silver denominations display these varieties, though on bronze and copper there seems to be even more.

Thanks so much. Richard’s site is fantastic but haven’t been able to find a copy of Gouby anywhere and not for the lack of trying!!! finally got a copy of Freeman coming so looking forward to getting stuck into that.
