Short Cross Penny

Back with a sift through the collection / hoard of my Hammered coins

This Identification is a real challenge when rubbed out, 

could it be a Short Cross, Penny, Otto of Ravensberg 1220-1244 ? 

or John 1199-1216

a better knowledge opinion appreciated,......... many thanks "H"

Not much to go on, but definitely a John (Class 5 ?) or Henry III (class 6?)short cross penny.

Still trying to work out the moneyer and mint

I think I can see DRE, which could make it:

Alisandre on C, G or GI  (Ipswich) or R (Rochester). That would make it John class 5b or 5c.

or

Andrev on London, Canterbury, Lincoln or Winchester. Also John class 5.

There's definiitely a ligated ND, but that wouldn't necessarily help to differentiate between the two. Possibly a C at the end of the mint signature?

So, I'm going for ANDREV.ON.NIC, John class 5, Lincoln mint  

Anyone else?

Hi a friend has asked me to identify the following coin i believe it's a short cross penny but it's larger than normal approximately 21/22mm and the weight is 1.24g unfortunately no head as has been damaged in the ground and unable to confirm type and mint/moneyer please can you help

Spot on. It could in theory be a class 1a2, 1a5, 1b1, 1b2 or 1c, but 1a2 is immediately ruled out because there is no square C or E and 1a5 because there is no stop after LVND.

The others rely on observing a stop between S and R on the obverse (present on 1b1 and 1b2, but omitted on 1c). The round C and the R are clear enough, but is the gap between the two letters big enough for a stop? I'm not sure.

In the end it doesn't really matter, because the coin is pretty much toast, but I enjoy getting as far as possible with these hopeless cases.
