King Stephen / Anarchy Period Penny? ID Help

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are doing well. I came across a few coins which were being sold for basically the scrap weight (most likely detectorist finds) and amongst them was this coin. I have given it a clean and straightened the flan. Evidently there is a small chunk missing but still has quite a few nice details remaining, and a really nice tone! I have been through my Spink Catalogue but haven't found an exact match anywhere. The reverse bears a Quadrilateral On Cross Fleury Type design similar to a Henry I Penny Classified as Spink 1276 however the obverse of my coin clearly depicts the portrait of the king facing right rather than forward. Could it be a Norman Coin Type that I am not aware of? Perhaps a regional coin type from the anarchy period. Any info would be helpful.

Thank you all so much in advance! Look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest Regards

There is coins from the Carlisle mint that were possibly struck under the Scots that have a right sided sceptre.

Not sure if that's what you've got or something that's double struck. The coins from that period were a mess.

Wow! I've had a read and a look at the photos, and I have to say it looks like those examples look as close as it's going to get! I doubt it is double struck from the look of it in person but I am very grateful for the ID! I 100% agree, the period of the anarchy was definitely a numismatic free for all, whoever had a mint, minted whatever they like. I may hold onto it and see if I can get an even closer ID because there is some lettering to go off of in the obverse legend! Thank you so much once again for taking the time to help!
