Chris Perkins Posted December 31, 2003 Posted December 31, 2003 Coin Manage 2003 UK is a piece of software available from Liberty Street, a canadian based data base producer.In it's current form the software is good and has many useful features, but because it was originally designed for US/Canadian coin collectors there are perhaps some improvements that could be made to make it easier to use for British collectors.I have established this forum to collect points of view about the software and will submit them to the makers in the hope that the next version will be more useful (and sell more!) to British coin collectors.I encourage you to download the 30 day trial product here:ftp://libertystreet.com/pub/CoinMngUK.exePlay around with it and make your feelings known in this forum. Guest custard1966 Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Just got broadband a few days ago, and one of my first tests was to download the demoI was sufficiently impressed to buy it - much easier than using Excel anyway.To respond to the point Chris made in the other thread about grades - I agree that having all the American grades in the list in unhelpful and I couldn't (yet) find a way to add new ones (or remove the US ones), but you don't have to choose a grade from the list you can type in any text you like. You can choose which grades to use when displaying the values for a coin type, but not when selecting the condition. We should request that as a future enhancement.Hope this helps. Quote

Guest custard1966 Posted January 3, 2004 Posted January 3, 2004 It looks to me like all the data is stored in an Access database, so it shouldn't be that hard to modify the grades list (assuming it's not hard-coded in the software).It also wouldn't be too hard to knock up something to edit the list.Sadly, I don't have the necessary tools at present but if Liberty Street aren't forthcoming I can investigate further. I do have broadband!!I contacted them by email and within minutes they replied and have posted me the cd for $5 which they say will be refunded if I buy the software. The boss will let me use the server here to host it.I've been thinking about it a lot recently. I also have a large dvd collection for which I use the free DVD Profiler by Intervocative software. It allows people to add their own additions and upload them to the master database and then download updates to their own collection, so they have a locally mirrored version of the database.What I was thinking along the lines of is using the basic model as a starting point. So there is a local client which connects via the internet to download the master database. Users could submit additions/changes up to the internet.If each country had it's own reference tables, they could be highly customised. I would also like to have information about various mints, their catalogues etc.By giving users the ability to update the info then you could actually build a relatively large database in a shorter amount of time than having someone key in each entry by hand.You could also have a better history of each coin, for example not only showing the mint, but the dates between it was produced, notes on it, web links, etc.People could then add to each coin and get a really get reference library with it.The biggest concern is the size of the update. The database could end up pretty massive and people aren't want to going to have to download masses of stuff each time. Perhaps if people could flag which country sets they want to download each time?Hmmm.If people think this is a good idea then perhaps we might roll it forward into a design phase.I know enough about the software side but I'm only a amateur at the coin collecting, having only recently just started to take it fairly seriously.I think then, my proposal is to set-up a website for starters that will allow people to see a basic design and say what they want in it. Even if nothing comes of it, someone could always give the design to another company.Tony Quote
