Emperor Oli Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 This has been on my watchlist for a while. I'm sure it's a strong EF, but was wondering about the odd toning on it.This only seems to affect the obverse; indeed, the reverse has quite nice, even toning. It was relisted about a week ago after it didn't sell, for the same starting price. I may bid on it depending on your judgements...I just wonder if the toning is suspect or just weird. Could it be the product of some ill-fated cleaning attempt? I don't know whether I see hairlines in the reverse fields. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 I don't think I'd call that a strong EF, and the toning is yuk. Leave it well alone at £49 I'd say!! Quote
Master Jmd Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 Tricky i'd say, it looks nice, but as you say that toning lets it down a bit...I think I will have to agree with chris on this one, but I do not have any books at hand atm, so it really depends on its value. Quote
Sylvester Posted April 24, 2005 Posted April 24, 2005 I'd leave it alone. If the tone ain't even then there's a reason why.An American will buy that one sooner or later. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 24, 2005 Author Posted April 24, 2005 You've made up my mind for me. Non! Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 25, 2005 Author Posted April 25, 2005 Holy Moley now I'm in love!I&L GoldbergAND it's proof! A steal! Quote
Sylvester Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 That's a much better specimen all round, well preserved, nice grade. I personally don't care much for the tone as i find it distracts from the design, but i'm a slate grey lover. Quote
Master Jmd Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 And do you have that much money to spare? It is quite lovely...the detail is fabulous Quote
Peter Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 Unless the proof is absolutley perfect I don't see the point....it would always nag me(especially the £150/200 of nagging... )Its a coin I would rather see in the flesh.Nice though...he says as he sneeks off to make a postal bid. Quote
Peter Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 MS64 proof is far from perfect...(in the US system)..fine for currency but proofs? Quote
Sylvester Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 You know i think the tone will have kept it out of the higher grades anyhow.Anything beyond MS65 is pure fabrication anyway. If i were you i'd forget the US grade altogether and just go with UNC. Quote
Emperor Oli Posted April 26, 2005 Author Posted April 26, 2005 And do you have that much money to spare? I do, but if I didn't, I'd find a way. Anyhow, I've looked and I don't think non-US peeps can bid. Quote
