Luca Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 Hi all I recently found this coin metal detecting and have no idea when or where its from. All I know is that its silver and by my guess from around 1500s-1600s and seems to have religious images on. Any help would be welcome. I will put the other side of the coin on as it will not fid on this post. Thanks, Luca Quote
Ukstu Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 (edited) It looks like a Venetian Soldino. Not sure of whom though as it's not my area. Try looking on google or finds.org.uk or here http://www.ancientresource.com/lots/venice/venetian.html Edited August 12, 2018 by Ukstu Quote
bagerap Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 There are very few good references for early Venetian coins but these are good: http://www.numismaticaitaliana.org/biblioteca/files/libri/papadopoli_venezia_1.pdf http://www.numismaticaitaliana.org/biblioteca/files/libri/papadopoli_venezia_2.pdf Quote
bagerap Posted August 12, 2018 Posted August 12, 2018 And for Italy in general: https://www.numismaticadellostato.it/web/pns/iuno-moneta/biblioteca/corpus Quote
Luca Posted August 12, 2018 Author Posted August 12, 2018 Just been having a look and it seems to be a soldino of Leonard Loredan minted between 1501-1521 and apparently was brought to Britain by venetian merchants and was of the same value as a half penny but was illegal in Britain as it was slightly lighter than a half penny.
