Johnshan Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 I just been closely studding one of my coins that I bought at a market. Its a 1820 George III sixpence. Spink 3791. Can you help me decide if the sixpence is ESC 2209, old ESC 1639B ( I of HONI over S) or not? Thanks for your help. Just couldn't sort the pic out neater Sorry Quote
Rob Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 No it isn't. The I has lost its serifs. I don't have a sixpence, but the shilling is similar and looks as below. 1 Quote
Michael-Roo Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 Rob is quite right, when present, I over S is unmistakable. Here's my own 1820 shilling as a second example. Quote
Rob Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 Interestingly the 1817 and 1820 I/S dies are different. I guess the engraver thought he was making the word PENSE? Quote
