decimal coins

Hi everyone!

First of all, forgive my bad english!

I've now decided to begin to collect decimal coins, from 1968-1971 to nowadays.

As I'm italian and will result dificult to me to find single coins, what do you think is better. collect, and buying, single coins or is better buying mint folders (expecilly for the last years, where there are a lot of commemoratives)?

As you are in Italy (I presume) I would recomend getting the mint sets. But if you want more of a challenge I would recomend getting the individual coins.

If I were collecting decimal, I would buy the mint proof folders. They are relatively cheap (about £12 each for the early sets, rising to roughly £25 for modern ones) and the coins are encased, with full lustre.

You have to be very careful with the BRM proof sets, especially the earlier ones. The bronze coins tend to tone a lot in these sets. Finding them without toning can sometimes be a challenge. But, if you don't mind toning, then sometimes the sets with toned coins are discounted by dealers.

Proof sets have been issued every year since 1971.

Blister pack mint sets have been issued since 1982.

As you get into it more, you will find that some coins were not released for circulation some years, and the only way to obtain them is by getting the Proof or Mint sets.

At risk of sounding pedantic, that should read "every year since 1972". The 1970 and 71 set were issued retrospectively that year. 73-76 all date from 1976. Quite clear really :-)

Yes, you are correct. I should have clarified that Proof sets have been issued "dated" every year since 1971.

And that 1970 set is a nice one, too. I only have 2 proof sets, the 1970 and 1971. Last and first, so to speak.

And while we are on the subject of Proof sets and Mint sets, no collection would be complete without the "Decimalization Wallet" issued with the 1968 5p & 10p, 1971 ½p, 1p, 2p.

I've got 2 '37 Proof sets. One is like new, the other has very nice coins in general but the case is 6 out of 10.

£275 for the nice one

Very tempting. I've seen about half a dozen recently, all over £200. Any chance of pictures? A decent box is useful, but then £180 is a good price. Needs to be slept on

(It cost me £165 last summer at a London Coin fair. And it's just been sitting around eating up capital!)

Comment on the "decimalization wallet." The wallet is soft plastic, so you will almost never find pristine coins in them, having been tarnished and destroyed by the PVC in the plastic. There are lots of nice, raw BU coins of the dates 1968-1971 about.

Is there any "official" version of this information?? I am just curious about it.

It's one of those things I've seen written several times but can't for thelife of me think where. Since I have most of these sets, that might be a good place to start looking.

Strange that Coincraft gives the mintage figure for all individual coin, but not the proof sets!
