Chris Perkins Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 This is a rare one from what I can tell, and well above average condition for its ilk. Atkins 451 'DUKE OF YORK' / 'FARTHING 1756'. Has a ticket with it indicating it was bought from Lickey as GVF in Sep 1972 for £3. 2 Quote
copper123 Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 I remember Likey coins if I remember rightly they advertised in coin monthly in the seventies . £3 was quite a price tag for the early seventies , there again this coin is in tip top grade looks like EF for issue Quote
Peter Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 You've probably seen this Chris? http://www.coinsgbforum.com/?showtopic=809 Quote
Chris Perkins Posted July 7, 2016 Author Posted July 7, 2016 Yes, saw that Peter. A few years ago and no pic, which is a shame. Quote
copper123 Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 (edited) The coin itself is evasive copy of a trade token . These tokens were heavly circulated in the uk from 1788 onwards - there was a death penalty on copying regal coins coin so it would have been much easyer to fake trade tokens for which there was no death penalty . copper123 Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 The farthing itself is of course not contemporary to 1756 it would have been made in 1790 or so , specially made to look worn and used when put into circulation . The idea was just to get the coin into circulation where it would circulate for posterity , as everyone who got hold of it would not want to hang on to it for long as their was nowhere to redeam it .
