Rob Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Googling 1989 year of the snake is worse than useless. Clues anybody as to what it is? Diameter is about 32-33mm and weight of object, capsule and plastic is only 17.32g. A similar capsule is just under 3g, so allowing a gram for the plastic leaves an approximate weight of 13-13.5g Thanks. Quote
Nutsaboutcoins Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Not one I'm familiar with, Do you think it is Gold Rob? as a lot of gold commemoratives have the weight & fineness on the coin. Ian.. Quote

Phil FK Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 The large characters say: Peaceful prosperous snake year The smaller ones below say something like: Made at the Mint factory ShenYang in China. Here in Singapore the mint produces special medallions like this & for other occasions. Not legal tender but usually gold or silver. A bit of Googling around Shenyang mint reveals similar. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shenyang-mint-1988-Lunar-Dragon-brass-33mm-china-coin-medal/322088060482?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3Dd797cb89c8b241729b247fe309d878a9%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D161820302544 Quote
Rob Posted May 11, 2016 Author Posted May 11, 2016 Wonderful, thank you. It was obviously not gold - too light, and the guy who picked them up in China 25 years ago threw them in with the rest of the things I bought off him. I suspect he would have remembered if he had paid gold prices. Quote
