A comprehensive collection of groats, Medieval and Tudor including many very rare examples with important pedigrees are on offer.

In my opinion, the sale is conservatively graded and well illustrated.  The coloured plates where all the lots are on display are particularly good.

Even when compared to other specialized groat sales, e.g., Brady, Buck or Gilboy, this collection is impressive.

Yes I agree a very important auction . Just the 3 groats of Edward I make a collection great ! Do you know if I can request an hard-copy of the catalogue for free or I have to pay ? Because I think this is one of those you need to have on your library .

Hi Matteo95

I collected groats in the mid-eighties concentrating mainly on Henry VII/VIII. Then, although a fairly regular Spinks customer, I never managed to obtain a much sought after piece, Henry VIII 2nd coinage groat with Laker bust A with Roman lettering, Lot 210 in this collection!  Too late now, I've moved on.

With regards to obtaining a catalogue, unless you are a subscriber or a potential customer known to them, I think it's doubtful they will send them free.  One option is to download a PDF either from their site or numisbids.com.

Having said this, nothing to lose by sending a request via e-mail.

I managed to get a free copy by e-mailing them.  Will be doing a lot of bidding on Thur, over 50% of my gaps are potentially fillable.  (Hopefully there don't seem to be too many groat collectors on this site!!)

Managed 4 out of the 8 I wanted (and probably overpaid for 2 of them, although not dramatically).   Fortunately I've spent very little in the last 4 months, still left a bit of a hole in the wallet though...

What did you get and what did you miss?

a question about the lot 46 : it was described as Stewartby 1b1 but , being the crosses of type 1 , shouldn't it be a rarer 1a ??

Got 132 (Edward IV 2nd reign Bristol), 144 (Richard III in name of Edward IV/V), 234 Edw VI in name of Henry VIII - bust 5) and 236 (Durham House).  Lost out on 125 (Henry VI restored York), 128 (Edward IV 2nd reign York), 159 Richard III York and 229 Henry VIII Southwark.  Had to decide whether to put all my eggs in the 'Richard III York' basket or spread out and opted for the latter.

132 and 236 a little expensive, I wasn't making another bid in either case - I graded 236 rather less than VF overall.

Looks like everyone got most of what they wanted judging by conversations today at Harrogate.

Durham House bust 6 coins rarely come up in very good condition. FWIW I thought I paid tops when I bought mine, but in retrospect it was not so bad. There are a handful knocking around in acceptable condition which were illustrated in the past - which says something. Mine is ex Parsons and Ryan.

I remember being the underbidder on a Durham House groat about 2-3 years ago.. which promptly appeared here a few days later under 'coin acquisition of the week'.  It may even have been yours Rob - can't remember now.

I cannot tell a lie. It was me. It was this one from the June 2013 sale
