Hi, I have recently come across this piece, and have absolutely no idea what it is. I picked it up, because presumably - due to the age - it is silver, and so would be worth around £1 in scrap. I will keep it if it's worth a little more, though; I acknowledge that it has a hole in it, but am just curious of what it is. I can tell you that it is not in "collectors coins GB", or in any of my other books, but it has the Britannia on it so surely it is British? Please help!

I've just finished reading an article written by Katherine Eustace entitled Britannia: Some High Points in the History of the Iconography on British Coinage. It traces the history of the Britannia designs and suggests that the designs evolution was greatly inspired by significant social, political and economic factors. It's an interesting read with a handful of plates. So I'm wondering - which of the Britannia designs is your favourite? Britannia first appears in Roman coins. With the restoration of the monarchy Britannia appears first in a medal (1660) and then in a number of farthing patterns.
