  1. PS - it is about 10.7 grams and I realise I didn't include a scaling object. It is about 2 cm across.
  2. I bought a couple of crappy coins from e-bay as gap fillers last year sometime... a victorian farthing and an earlier george one. I have bought 100s of coins from ebay in the past and never expect the grades to be quite as advertised. The victorian one was advertised as EF. The picture was very blurry and all I could tell was that it was shiny. I didn't expect it to be EF at all and I won the auction for about 4 quid including delivery. I did however expect it to be nearly fine or VG maybe... or even poor. I didn't care about the george one which was really worn but the date showed. When it arrived it looked as though it had been cleaned with a sander or a file or something. Maybe put under shoe and skidded on down the high street. It was shiny because it had been polished but had lots of wear and had huge violent scratches and gouges all over it - none of which were visible on the blurry photo. . I was in a bad mood that day and only gave the guy about 1 star for product description on the feedback - I have only ever given non positive feedback about twice ever. I never give bad rep usually but I was annoyed. He sent me a snotty note about giving him neg feedback and how I was an idiot to expect a EF coin for the price and he was not happy about my rating of his sale over just £4.00. I calmly told him that the term EF has a specific meaning with coins and collectors but maybe I had been hasty in giving him neg feedback if he didn't know what he was talking about. He accused me of dishonesty regarding the condition saying it was at least VF when it left his place. He was the one selling a worn out coin polished up with a scourer with blurry photo and calling it an EF grade so he shouldn't talk about dishonesty. I never usually give bad feedback, even if the coins is crap... and the bloke was right that the coin was very cheap. I wouldn't have minded if he hadn't offered an estimated grade and it turned up worse than the pic, or if the coin was just polished and nearly a fine grade, but his claim of EF annoyed me. The huge scratches and the massive wear were so blatant and ugly and did not show up at all in the photo and no one in there right mind would describe the coin as so. Normally I have very good experiences when buying old coins from e-bay. Sometimes there are some real shockers though as you guys have shown here.
  3. I am struggling to identify this. The head has 'Mako...' on it. That might be the start of a name. the obverse is an eagle on a scroll or a thunderbolt. The guy I got it from thought it was Roman. I thought roman republic, greek or polemic. anyone know what it might be? Thanks.
  4. Doesn't seem to be a ridge - I'll take a side on picture sometime, it seems smooth.
  5. Awesome Rooneydog, thanks... That's exactly it... it has the Pi symbol top right and the remains of the Z bottom left in the incursive square with aphrodite's head with ponytail and earring. Mine seems in better condition... if it isn't a copy (how would I tell? I'm pretty sure the Roman one I got from the same guy was a copy). Quite encouraging that it went for £160. :-) Does make me think it could be a copy though due to the price I paid.
  6. is this better for for the head pic? I guess this is Aphrodite then. :-)
  7. Thanks again - looking up Caria, Knidos has given me lot to go on already. I'll get a better picture of the head side.
  8. here is the size comparison. it is 6.35g.
  9. Thank you.
  10. the other side...
  11. Bought this with a fake Roman coin at a boot fair. I knew the Roman one was a fake, but what about this? I know nothing about these at all. I looked online for similar things and it looks Greek. I've seen similar in the £2 to £700 range, lol. anyone know what it is? It has a nice weight to it and it similar size to a 5p coin.
  12. The pair. - about £22.00. Maybe paid too much for the older one, but it looks nice in my folder. :-)
  13. here's the other - 1679 2d.. a bit worn... possibly Fair condition.
  14. here is my 2d. I bought another one too (although I said I wouldn't)..
  15. Also - I'm not completely sure about your forum etiquette yet, so I'll ask here, If i have a question about a coin or coins I have bought, should I ask them here in this thread or start a new one? I found 2 x 1926 pennies with modified effigies in a bag of about 30 1926 pennies and was wondering about them... I quite like them so I might keep one for my collection and sell the other. :-)
  16. Thanks all... I was thinking after reading above - what is the difference with the maundy 3d and the ordinary silver 3d? How easy is it to tell the difference?
  17. Hi all. I'm new here and thought I'd say hi. I mainly collect circulated British pre-decimal coins. I have never purchased any maundy coins, mainly due to the price of them. Are they worth buying if not in sets? I bought a 1938 2 pence from e-bay - mainly because it was under a fiver and i do not have one. The picture looked as though it was in fine condition but a little worn and dull. When i got it it was much better than I thought it was going to be and seems to still have a little lustre on it. :-) Does have a few small dents in it though on the edges. I probably wont buy any more of them unless I get spare money and see a bargain, but that don't happen too often. How come they get separated from their sets? I thought they were only issued in sets, I didn't think they got spent that much.
  18. Detail looks lovely -nice condition.
